Nice neighbourhood in Kamigyo-ku Kyoto.
Machiya are traditional wooden townhouses that were popular with Kyoto merchants and craftspeople until just before WWII. Because Kyoto wasn’t bombed during the war, many fine machiya have survived until the present day. While some Kyotoites continue to live in machiya, many surviving machiya have been converted to restaurants, shops or vacation rentals.
Room sizes (in jou) are based on the tatami size. Tatami sizes vary a little depending the location in Japan, old or new, etc. Often 85.5 cm x 179 cm.
